Keith Gretzky began his coaching career as an assistant coach with the Tri-City Americans (WHL) after retiring from professional hockey in 1993. He left Tri-City after one season to become the head coach of the WCHL’s Fog in Bakersfield.

He coached the Fog for three seasons (1995-1998) before moving on to coach the Asheville Smoke of the United Hockey League for two seasons (1998–2000). He used the Smoke to coach his brother Brent. He was also the Smoke’s general manager.

Brent Gretzky is the brother of Wayne and Keith Gretzky and a former professional ice hockey player from Canada. He briefly played for the Tampa Bay Lightning in the National Hockey League.

Brent Gretzky grew up playing minor hockey for the OMHA’s Brantford Classics in Brantford, Ontario. He played hockey for the Brantford Classics of the Mid-Western Junior B Hockey League in 1988-89. The Belleville Bulls drafted him in the first round of the 1989 OHL Priority Selection, and he spent three years with them.

He shared a line with future NHL player Darren McCarty with the Bulls. Gretzky was drafted in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft by the expansion Tampa Bay Lightning, but he did not have the same success as his brother Wayne.
