Naoya Inoue is a Japanese professional boxer who had won all 24 of his professional bouts (21 of them via knockout), as of January 2023. In August 2013, in the 4th professional bout of his career, he won the Japanese light-flyweight title. In December 2013, he won the vacant OPBF (Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation) light-flyweight title. In April 2014, he won the WBC (World Boxing Council) light-flyweight title. Naoya retained that title in his next bout in September 2014. In November 2014, he vacated his light-flyweight title to challenge for the WBO (World Boxing Organization) junior bantamweight title. In December 2014, he won the WBO junior bantamweight title. He then retained that title in 7 successive bouts. In May 2018, in the 16th professional bout of his career, he won the WBA (World Boxing Association) (Regular) bantamweight title. Naoya retained that title in his next bout in October 2018. In May 2019, he won the IBF (International Boxing Federation) and vacant The Ring (an American boxing magazine) bantamweight titles. In November 2019, he retained both those titles and also won the WBA (Super) bantamweight title. He then retained these 3 titles in 3 successive bouts. In June 2022, Naoya again retained the aforementioned 3 titles and also won the WBC bantamweight title. In December 2022, he retained all 4 of these titles and also won the WBO bantamweight title. He became the first-ever Japanese boxer to claim undisputed championship status in the three-or-four-belt era, as well as the first boxer in history to have defeated all 4 major sanctioning organizations’ champions by knockout. In January 2023, Naoya vacated all 5 of his titles as he moved up to the super-bantamweight division.

Naoya Inoue Facts

Naoya first came into the spotlight in 2009 when he won the Japanese Interscholastic Athletic Meeting as well as the Japanese Junior National Championships.

Representing Japan, at the amateur level, he won the ‘Bronze’ medal at the 2010 Tehran Asian Amateur Boxing Championships in the light-flyweight division. That year, he also won the Japanese Junior Selection Tournament. He also finished in 2nd place at the Japanese National Championships.

In July 2011, Naoya clinched the ‘Gold’ medal at the 21st edition of the President’s Cup, held in Jakarta, Indonesia. He also won the Japanese Interscholastic Athletic Meeting that year.

He finished as the runner-up at the 2012 Asian Boxing Olympic Qualification Tournament, held in Astana, Kazakhstan, and finished his amateur career with a 75-6 win-loss record.

In 2019, Naoya was included in Forbes magazine’s list of ’30 Under 30 in Asia’ in the ‘Entertainment & Sports’ category.

As of August 2022, he was ranked the world’s best active boxer, pound for pound, by the Transnational Boxing Rankings Board; 2nd-best by The Ring, the Boxing Writers Association of America, and ESPN; and 7th by boxrec.com. Naoya was also ranked as the best bantamweight by The Ring, the Transnational Boxing Rankings Board, ESPN, and boxrec.com.
